Desciption
Beginning in 1815 and culminating in the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris, Les Misérables follows the lives and interactions of several characters. The novel begins when Valjean is released from 19 years' imprisonment in the galleys; five for stealing bread to feed his sister's seven starving children and fourteen more for numerous escape attempts. The story follows his struggles and his experience of redemption.Les Misérables contains various subplots, but the main thread is the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean, who becomes a force for good in the world but cannot escape his criminal past. The novel as a whole is one of the longest ever written. It is divided into five volumes, each volume divided into several books, and subdivided into chapters, for a total of 48 books and 365 chapters. Each chapter is relatively short, commonly no longer than a few pages. Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love. Les Misérables is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket. Read more
Review
The book itself is okay. I mean, it’s something I would expect from a cheap re-print. I would pay $20 for it. It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s fine. But they are charging $60 for it! If I am spending that kind of money, I expect the book to be higher quality.First of all, the cover and dust cover are the same print, and up close it looks fuzzy and a bit pixelated. The dust cover is a fingerprint magnet, too. I had it in my hands for less than a minute, and the book was already starting to look shabby.Second, the book cover is off center (and maybe a touch crooked?) which makes it look cheap, and low effort.Third, the spine does not look like it can support the weight of all those pages long term. They are not sewn in, like you would expect from such an expensive book, but held by a thin layer of glue. That’s a recipe for pages falling out if I’ve ever seen one. Especially since they used heavy weight paper.Fourth, I was lead to believe that this book was annotated. As in, has plenty of side information relevant to the understanding of the book and author. It does not. It has a tiny index (4 pages) at the very end of the book with a few minor footnotes. This book is over 1,100 pages long! Come on! The whole reason I was willing to spend $60 in the first place was for a fully annotated book.
